Developing Employee Communication Skills

According to the book Communication Skills, 85 percent of success in business is determined solely by an individual’s communication skills. Perhaps that is why many employers rank “verbal communication skills” as the most important skill necessary to do the job well. John Sanchez, Managing Director for The FPA Group, a consulting firm that specializes in helping businesses with financial planning and analysis (FP&A), shares how strong employee communication skills can benefit organizations and what employers should be doing to improve these skills.

 

How can strong communication skills benefit the organization?

 

Good communication can make or save an organization money, while poor communication may ultimately cost money. Just look at the statistics from Gartner Research that state that 70 to 80 percent of business intelligence projects fail due to poor communication. This can be extremely costly in time, money and other resources. On the flip side, good communication can result in clear goals, which in turn are more likely to be reached. Good communication also elicits buy-in, which can dramatically improve accountability and morale.

 

How can organizations ensure they are hiring employees that possess strong communication skills?

 

In addition to learning more details about an applicant’s work experience in the interview, asking the right interview questions can enable you to better understand an applicant’s personality type and communication style.

  

How important is a communication skills development plan and how should organizations go about creating one?

 

A plan is important, but taking action is more important. Many people go to conferences and take lots of notes, but then never implement any changes. These plans do not need to be fancy or laborious. In fact, employers can simply make a list of communication skills they most want to improve and set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals. However, the real key is taking action. You hear all the time that “knowledge is power,” but knowledge is only potential power until you put it to work.
