How to Integrate Temporary Staff into Your Team

For organizations that utilize temporary staffing, ensuring that these employees integrate seamlessly into current office culture can sometimes be a struggle. Full-time employees are familiar with the office atmosphere and their current jobs and responsibilities, and typically have the support that comes with working daily with the same group of colleagues. However, temporary employees may not have any of those advantages, leaving many struggling to fit in with co-workers and daily routines.


Karen Wilson, president and CEO of MAKE Corporation, a national resource for staffing and consulting services, shares with us the challenges that employers face when bringing on temporary staff and how employers can ensure that both temporary and permanent employees work together to achieve maximum results.


What challenges do employers face in integrating temporary staff into their team? How can they overcome these challenges?


Many employers are still somewhat reactive in their use of temporary staff and that can make the integration a little less seamless. Other challenges include the availability of specific skill sets. Specialized skill sets, such as IT, engineering and finance and accounting continue to be in high demand and short supply and this presents a challenge to the end company.


Employers should train their hiring managers to “sell” their assignments to the temporary workers so that, in the end, the company will have all options on the table. Many times, hiring managers conduct stringent interviews and ultimately the worker is not interested in working there. The company should always position itself to have the best candidates available to select from for their projects and they may inadvertently eliminate options without realizing this fact.


A good strategy is built upon the scope of the company’s need for and use of temporary staff. If large numbers of temporaries are part of the corporate workforce strategy, it makes sense to have a well-defined process and foundation from which to build. Being well prepared and establishing a consistent workflow are keys to adapting to the changing market. Having a knowledgeable team in place to facilitate the use of temporary workers can also mitigate risks associated with co-employment.


How can employers help ensure that both temporary and permanent employees will work together to deliver results?


Teams are becoming very integrated. Often, multiple third party vendors must integrate with the customer team to accomplish a goal.  However, the name of the company on the paycheck should be second to the professionalism demonstrated by the individual worker, whether they are temporary or permanent. More teams include both permanent and temporary workers and it is incumbent upon the leadership to ensure they are working collectively to meet the end goal. Remember that good project managers are necessary to help ensure the success of any results.


What steps can employers take to successfully integrate temporary employees into their workforce? 


Identify solid suppliers who have their own knowledge base of their customers so that they can facilitate the onboarding/integration process. By hiring professional contractors who are accustomed to integrating into mixed labor teams, you can help to ensure that your team experiences a seamless transition.
