Social Media Day: Social Media Job Search Tips

From the way we conduct business to the relationships we maintain, social media has transformed our lives. June 30, 2013 marks the fourth annual Social Media Day, an event launched by Mashable to recognize this revolution.

I would be remiss if I did not take the opportunity to highlight how social media can help your career, especially LinkedIn!

LinkedIn recently announced the new LinkedIn Contacts feature aimed to help maintain and organize your relationships (note:  this feature hasn't been rolled out to everyone yet, click here to get started):

Whether you’re currently seeking a new job or simply using LinkedIn to stay connected, it’s important to organize your network, something I've always struggled with, until now! This new feature allows you to add information about your contacts including notes, follow up reminders and how you met.

JOB SEEKERS:  this area may be your new best job seeking friend!

  • You will need to connect with the person though (when connecting, don't forget to tailor the message and spell check, spell check, spell check)

Once connected, select the "relationships" tab:
LinkedIn Profile

  • It's important to demonstrate attention to detail, especially during the hiring process. After an interview, if the hiring manager mentioned a detail such as the number of kids they have, their favorite vacation spot, vision for the department, or anything that may help trigger your conversation…list it here!

  • If you just went on an interview, surely you asked what the next steps are. Once the hiring manager gives you a time frame, head straight to this tab and set a follow up reminder.
  • If you connected with this person for a future opportunity, setting a follow up reminder also comes in useful. For example, if you connected with a recruiter and they stated they don’t currently have any openings but to check back in a month, set your reminder!
    • Your reminder will appear on your contacts page when you select "your day" or you will receive a reminder email

How You Met

  • If you recently interviewed with this person or connected with them for a future opportunity, it’s important to note the details of how you met. While it may be fresh in your mind now, chances are you’ll forget a few weeks or months down the line. Whether it be for you or a friend, if you ever need to reach out, you’ll want to reference this section.

While this section requires a little extra time, you’ll be glad you took the time now to organize your contacts for the future!

Happy #smday everyone. Share your social media career tips below!
